Protein function and interaction
In somatic cells, SPAG8 is found to be involved in the regulation of cell cycle by changing the phosphorylation level of Tyr15on cdc2. These results suggest that SPAG8 might play a role in cell division during spermatogenesis, as well. (Li et al., 2009 PMID: 19548270).SPAG8 (hSMP-1) interacts with RanBPM (Ran binding protein in the microtubule-organizing centre) and probably forms a complex with a-tubulin, thereby modulating microtubule assembly and/or activity and germ cell differentiation (Tang et al., 2004 PMID: 15014887).SPAG8 interacts and regulates ACT (activator of CREM in the testis) and plays an important role in CREM mediated gene transcription, an essential regulatory pathway for the spermiogenic program (Wu et al., 2010 PMID: 20488182 ).
