Protein function and interaction
The ARX protein, encoded by the aristaless-related homeobox gene, is a member of the paired class of homeoproteins, required for normal brain development. It is a transcription factor essential for important developmental processes such as proliferation, cell differentiation and neuronal migration (reviewed in Friocourt et al., 2006 PMID: 16519652). ARX mutations are involved in different syndrome forms of mental retardation (Strømme et al., 2002 PMID: 11889467; Gecz et al., 2006 PMID: 16650978).
