Protein function and interaction
NR6A1 encodes an orphan nuclear receptor and belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family. Schmitz et al., 1999 (PMID:10524192) demonstrated that NR6A1 (GCNF) is up-regulated after exposure to retinoic acid. NR6A1 down-regulation precedes neural differentiation, indicating that NR6A1 may be important for human neural determination and differentiation. NR6A1 may also play a role in the control of gene expression in early embryogenesis and during spermatogenesis (Lei et al., 1997 PMID:9134503).
