Protein function and interaction

SSX2 may act as a transcriptional regulators, since in vitro experiments have shown that it acts as a transcriptional repressor when targeted to a reporter gene (Lim et al., 1998).

Yeast two-hybrid system experiments identified two SSX2-interacting proteins, RAB3IP, the human homolog of an interactor of the Ras-like GTPase Rab3A; and, SSX2IP. Both RAB3IP and SSX2IP interact with the N-terminal moiety of the SSX2 protein (de Bruihn et al., 2002 PMID: 12007189). LIM homeobox protein LHX4 was also identified among the proteins that interact with the SSX C-terminal repression domain (de Bruijn et al., 2008 PMID: 17667940).

SSX2 may be fused to the SYT gene as a result of the t(X;18) translocation in synovial sarcoma (Clark et al., 1994).
