Protein function and interaction
SPO11 proteins have conserved functions in a number of organisms in generating sites of double-stranded DNA breaks (DSBs) that are thought to be the starting points of homologous recombination, which is required for proper segregation of chromosomes and the generation of genetic diversity during meiosis (Romanienko & Camerini-Otero, 1999 PMID: 10534401; Li & Ma, 2006 PMID: 16699536).
